Earth Day, 2016: Future generations are counting on us

Posted in: ,

An Earth Day message from New Democrat environment spokesperson George Heyman:

As we celebrate Earth Day, let us remember it is also a time to examine our commitment to future generations.

I believe that here in British Columbia, the Christy Clark government has failed to show the necessary commitment to action and is failing the essential climate leadership test: are your emissions going up or down? Since Christy Clark became premier, greenhouse gas emissions have risen by more than 3 per cent and continue to trend upwards.

Environment Canada projects carbon pollution in British Columbia to increase by 32 per cent by 2030. This is in direct contrast to BC’s Climate Leadership Team, established by this government, which recommends that British Columbia cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent in that same timeframe.

This Earth Day, let’s commit to do better. Our children, grandchildren, and all generations that follow deserve to live in a world as healthy, vibrant and diverse as the one which we inherited. I and my colleagues will continue to speak up for concrete and meaningful action to address climate impacts.

Below is a statement from opposition Leader John Horgan for this Earth Day.
